The Merrimack Fraud Team is reporting a rise in Apple Support impersonation scams via call, email and text message. The message looks legitimate, but their stories vary from claims of fraudulent Apple Pay charges to technical support issues.
The message urges victims to take immediate action by calling a phone number or clicking a link in the text. By phone, scammers will instruct victims to move their money to a “safe” account via Apple Pay, Apple Cash or gift cards. The link will direct victims to a website that requests personal information and/or account credentials.
Regardless of the story, the scam is meant to instill a sense of urgency and panic so victims will disclose their personal information or provide access to their devices – without hesitation.
Apple does not reach out for personal information or request that customers call, text or email them. If you receive an unsolicited message from someone claiming to be from Apple or Apple Support, just hang up. Don’t click on any links or call any provided numbers.
If you’re a Merrimack customer and are concerned your personal or financial information was compromised, please call us directly at 603.225.2793.
