Merrimack County Savings Bank (The Merrimack) supports renovations to the historic Franklin Opera House and its efforts to expand performing arts in the community. Funded through the Community Development Finance Authority, The Merrimack pledged $25,000 toward the improvement project which will restore over 450 programs for school children and attract a wider variety of performances.
“At The Merrimack, we believe the performing arts brings the community together,” said Linda Lorden, President of The Merrimack. “By supporting the Franklin Opera House, we’re promoting the growth of the theatre and the local economy.”
Renovations to the Franklin Opera House include additional stairways and an elevator, as well as structural improvements and upgrades to the stage, mezzanine and balcony. If all goes according to plan, the Franklin Opera House is anticipated to open in November 2026.
“We’re grateful for The Merrimack’s support in bringing in a new century of community arts,” said Dan Darling, Executive Director of the Franklin Opera House. “Our goal is to transform the historic property into a community center that will have a notable economic impact.”
The Franklin Opera House is a non-profit volunteer organization and home for community-based performing groups, including Franklin Footlight Theatre, the FHS Players, FMS Players, Districtwide Musical, and Franklin Area Children’s Theatre. CDFA tax credits allow businesses to fund qualifying economic or community development projects in exchange for a tax credit that can be applied against state business tax payments. The tax credits are administered by the New Hampshire CDFA. Any business with operations in New Hampshire that contributes to a CDFA tax credit project receives a New Hampshire state tax credit worth 75 percent of their contribution. The credit can be used over a period of five years to reduce the business’ state tax liability (business profits, business enterprise, or insurance premium taxes). The tax credit program allows New Hampshire businesses to use their state tax dollars to support local projects that they care about. CDFA reviews many project applications each year, and awards tax credits to those they determine are feasible and will make the biggest impact on economic development in the state.
